Short answer
Citizens of 71 countries enter Paraguay as tourists without a visa, most for up to 90 days. They include the 27 European Union states, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, Argentina and Brazil. Another 115 nationalities, China and India among them, need a visa issued by the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores. Every traveller registers with Migraciones at the border, free of charge, and keeps the entry record until departure. Counts come from the Migraciones table updated in January 2026, read on October 6, 2026.

Table of the Dirección Nacional de Migraciones, updated in January 2026 and read on October 6, 2026. It lists 186 nationalities: 71 enter without a tourist visa and 115 need one. This page names part of them; check yours in the official table before booking.
The exemption for the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand comes from a temporary law, Ley 6790/2021, extended for 3 years by Ley 7314/2024. If your nationality is missing from the table, ask a Paraguayan consulate.
What Migraciones asks for at the border
Registering your entry and exit is mandatory for everyone, adults and minors, and free. It is done only at authorized Migraciones checkpoints at land crossings, river ports and airports. Page read on October 6, 2026.
- A valid passport. A national ID card is accepted only for citizens of Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Bolivia, Chile, Peru, Colombia and Ecuador.
- The visa, if your nationality needs one. Migraciones describes it as consular or on arrival, issued by the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores.
- At exit, your proof of entry: the stamp in your passport or the stamped card the inspector hands you.
- A receipt for a travel document still being processed is not accepted.
- The list mentions no travel insurance.
How long you can stay
Migraciones grants a temporary stay of up to 90 calendar days, depending on your type of entry; the table sets 30 or 60 days for some nationalities. Check the period written on your entry record before you leave the counter: Migraciones accepts no later claim. With a travel document close to expiry, the period granted takes that date into account.
A stay can be extended once, for no longer than the period first granted. Our guide to staying a few months covers the request and its fee.
Overstaying, or leaving without your proof of entry, carries a fine of ₲702,462 (about 118 USD), set by the migration law, Ley 6984/2022. You pay it online, or at the checkpoint in cash and in guaraníes. Dollar amount at the Banco Central del Paraguay reference rate of September 22, 2026 (₲5,935 to 1 USD).
If your nationality needs a visa
Migraciones names 2 forms: a consular visa and a visa on arrival, both issued by the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores. Until the consulate confirms that the visa on arrival applies to you, apply before you travel.
The Ministry's website did not answer our requests on October 6, 2026. This guide therefore gives no fee, no list of documents and no list of nationalities admitted to the visa on arrival: confirm these 3 points with the consulate that covers your country.
The Migraciones table has a 2nd column, for extending a stay, applying for residency or doing paid work. It marks a visa as required for 58 of the 71 nationalities that enter visa-free as tourists, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and France among them. It requires none from the 8 South American countries above, Belgium, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Switzerland; for Spain the visa is required and free. If you plan to stay, ask Migraciones or the consulate how this applies to you before travelling.
Yellow fever certificate
The Ministerio de Salud Pública y Bienestar Social requires the international yellow fever vaccination certificate, on paper or digital, from travellers aged 1 to 59 who arrive from a risk area or leave for one (Resolución S.G. N° 268 of May 9, 2025, published by Migraciones and read on October 6, 2026). The list of areas can change.
- Risk areas listed: Santa Cruz in Bolivia; Amazonas, Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul and Roraima in Brazil; Caquetá, Huila, Nariño, Putumayo, Vaupés and Tolima in Colombia; Boa Vista and Siparuni in Guyana; Huánuco, Junín, Madre de Dios, San Martín and Ucayali in Peru.
- Vaccination at least 10 days before the trip.
- Exempt: children under 1, people aged 60 and over, passengers in transit for up to 24 hours in a risk area, and people who cannot be vaccinated for health reasons, with a medical certificate and 6 days of health monitoring.
- If your country of origin is a risk area but you live elsewhere, proof of that residence is accepted.
Crossing by land: optional pre-registration
Migraciones offers a free web form that sends your details ahead of the check. Fill it in at least 48 hours before crossing; you receive a single-use QR code by email, to show with your travel documents. It works at 3 land posts: the Friendship Bridge in Ciudad del Este (border with Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil), Puerto José Falcón (border with Clorinda, Argentina) and Puerto Itá Enramada in Asunción (border with Formosa, Argentina). The form replaces neither the check nor the documents. Page read on October 6, 2026.
